what is glaber?

the glaber is name after the naked mole rat.its real ugly..lives in the desert and is almost impervious to pain.
glaber the program makes music automaticaly from stuff it finds scurrying around internet.it searches for mp3's and jpeg and gifs...then mixes them up making a stream of music an images. each time differently

where does it gets it material from?

glaber already has some sounds and images in it when you download it, so they always should start of sounding simular..after time they each become a different beast.no two performance are ever the same.

it gets its images from searching goolge images
and it gets it audio from serching.

can i make it go full screen?

does it put weird shit onto me 'puter?

no!.....it downloads all its stuff to (picturesdelete folder)or .it then searches through this to see what it can use and transports this stuff to (pictures folder)
the audio is downloaded directly to the audio folder
the program is standalone. that is to say you dont need to install anything to get it working.

where does it store its audio and images?

glabber stores its audio in the folder marked (:audio) and its visuals in the folder marked (:pictures)
if you add your own jpegs or giffs (in the pictures) or mp3s (in audio) glaber will use these to mix.

how do i look after glaber.

glaber has a folder of junk that need regulary emptying.you 'd think a proper programer would do this automaticaly, but the glaber is an untidy animal and needs a human to clean up the rubbish from the internet.
the folder that needs emptying and throwing away is (:picturesdelete )

is it new stuff each time?

glaber labels the media it collects sequentialy but chosses a different number to start from each time you start up.so eventualy you see a mix of all the data you have collected since you have downloaded glaber. but the media is loaded randomly,so no two performances are ever the same.

are they're any controls?

not realy..tis automatic.....thats the point.

what is glaber made in?

glaber is made in max/msp with jitter

it seems a bit slow.

glaber can slow down,but sure and steady.everytime you use it it gets more material,and each time you use it the more different (ish)itll be.sometimes slow internet ,heavy traffick,slow computers/full up computers/computers cause it to only download a few things a time.just keep it going......and itll be solid gone...
sometime the internet connection is too good and the visuals might judder whilst its loading too many visuals.

it doesnt seem to be downloading mp3's

it will its just sometimes there massive before gabber chops them down

its crashing...it wont start...

hmm...ill have a look.
sometimes dodgy media in the (pictures folder) or (audio folder) might do that.
check out yer audio settings
empty the (picturesdelete folder)
download it again
it need quicktime to be installed for the visuals inall......

how much space will it use up?

itll fill the folders up with 1500 items then start over writting em....
each time you start up glaber starts labeling at a different point, so material will build up over time
1500 audio files will take up about 4gigs worth of space eventualy....but itll take a long time
the picture folder when full will probly only be about a gigs worth of space...
if you think its getting too full free free to throw stuff away.

heres the blurb from the time.....

Flame Academy are a stupagroup made up from members of the Southmead Sound School and I Am The Mighty Jungulator.
Their debut lp "Banq Ourobouros" was recorded between 9 august 2005 and 13 august 2005, as part of the PAYP funded series of workshops. The young people were encouraged by the jungulator to free their mind of structure and to create an original lp through learning to jam and improvise. IATMJ's awareness of band dynamics helped to take the young adults through a series of situations which illustrated and demonstrated the problems of working in a band whilst enabling them to role play various solutions .The participants learnt how to make musical compromises whilst working as a group, learnt how to communicate their ideas to others and working practice of jamming.

thought id better explain the music in the last post......

tis for this gig...offload at the colston hall. Ive been asked to reinterperate some Ligeti peices with the jungulator by using some information gathered from the audience.

in order to keep data collection simple and easy to partake in,im planning only to take three pieces of information from the audience...and for that they only need to do two things.
remember the information the jungulator likes best is time and distance.... so with this in mind when the audience gives in data they will be presented with a computer with a map on it, and invited to mouse click on a map to show where they have traveled from, and to input an estimated traveling time.
from this information i can get distance traveled,time taken to travel, and direction (n.s,e,w but expressed as a coordinate with the colston hall as point 0,0).
this information is then used to organise the music data, put into the jungulator.

the information will be gathered on a pc running a max patch (ill use lcd to have a clickable map-then after clicking on yer basic location a text input box comes up asking for estimated time traveled)
then using the points plotted on this map,i can then work out distance traveled to colston hall and map direction. the information will be stored in a coll file which then is easy to transport over to my machine as a text file.....so no worries... data gathering,quick,clean and easy.

i can do a lot then with these three basic questions.

the first thing im doing is gonna reorginise the info into one big line,and use this as a score....so basical have one big distance line,with the points of distance marked on it,then map this on to the length of music. so when a point appears it will be used as an event trigger

the total travel time is found then avaverged out, the peronal travel time can then be expressed as a percentage of a total time, this information will be used a the time for length of trigger....or the trigger time

the map direction of point traveled from is worked out as a 2 point coordinate, with the colston hall a point 0,0 (tho might make something else the centre...cos it might make the information east,south and north bias......no one will live s.e cos of the sea......but it should be alright.....)anyway i can then used this information for spacialisation, and for flow of movement.....tis called for purposes of explanation direction

ok so how does this relate to the examples i.ve made........

part five

the jungulator has been set up into 8 record pods.
using the event trigger a sound is played for the trigger time. and this sound is recorded into the jungulator.each new trigger goes to a new pod,sequentialy.
the direction is used for sound spacialisation, (though i was thinking using 8 pods arrange like a compass and using the direction for choice of sound input).
the event triggers in this example arnt read from the time line sequentiayl, but are chosen at random,and played one after another.

part four

this is the same process as above,but all the event triggers are read sequentialy from the futherst to the closest.
one nice thing about this..cos more people will live to close to bristol,the sound will first be orginised quite far apart but on for longer,then the later information should be closer togehter and shorter.

part three

not the nicest sounding one...
here i was using 3 pods of the jungulator recording togther.and using the trigger times but all set from the same event trigger (the colston hall point 0,0).
dirction is used to plot the quad sterio..... and north or south of colston hall is used to determine wether the sound is trigger to the left (forwards) or to the right (backwards).
the event triggers are read randomly till they're all used up

part two

this one has the jungulator set up to five record pods and event triggers and trigger times are read sequential (the futhest from colston hall first and played one after the other) again direction is used to spatialise the sound.

part one-two

the jungulator has been set up to record into (all at once) 6 pods. the event triggers and trigger times are read sequentialy but from the colston hall (point 0)outwards. when each new event is played a jungulator pod is muted til there is none left then unmuted till theyre all playing again.

I got my brother an omnichord for his birthday last year. Ive been writting a midi program for it. Its a complete midi nightmare. You cant turn off it sending drums, and the strip where you play notes doesnt send out note information...so like i say ive been writtaing a program which will let you easily manipulate its midi data....
the main problem is that when using it with logic it seems impossible to turn off the omnichord going in on midi,ive tried setting the midi channel in logic to not accept input on certian channels,but it just wont let me...if anyone knows logic well enough to tell me where im going wrong...

anyway....i'll put that one up when im finished,in the mean time ive made a virtual one.

the way it works is that each row of keys produces a chord, and when the keypad is stroked left to right it plays theses notes (over 4 octives). Like an omni chord you can play 72 different chords

heres the keys

row qwertyuiop[] plays major chords
row asdfghjkl;'\ plays minor chords
row `zxcvbnm,./space plays a 7th

with caps lock on

row qwertyuiop[] plays major minor chords
row asdfghjkl;'\ plays major 7th chords
row `zxcvbnm,./space plays a 7th monr chords

sorry if there isnt a major minor scale, dont realy know the terminolgy.....

it sends out through midi (use IAC for sending to summat like logic, or use the computers on board synth), or you can test it using sinewaves....
the options to send it to a vst synth or a sample arent working yet....
